Imagine you’re taking a shower and you get this awesome blog post idea that you think your readers would really like.

I get great ideas while taking a shower. No judgements, please!

When you start blogging, ideas will come to you at random times.

But, just because it’s a good idea in general – or something that interests you personally – doesn’t mean it’s a good idea to write on your blog.

You need to do proper research and validate those blog post ideas before drafting them into actual content.

But, how do you do that? Keep reading…

Ask your audience

The easiest thing you could do is ask your audience if they would like to read something like your idea.

What you can do is post a poll on Twitter or Facebook with multiple ideas and see which one gets the most votes. Then, you can draft that idea into an actual blog post.

If you don’t have multiple ideas at the point, you can simply ask your followers if they would be interested in reading a blog post around your idea.

That way your followers would also think that their advice matters to you and you create content specifically for them.

Remember, blogging is not just about writing. It also means engaging and building a tribe around your content.

Google search

Perform a simple Google search for your idea/topic/keyword and take a look at the search results.

Are there any blog posts similar to the idea you’re planning to execute?

Or, the search results are completely different than what you were expecting?

Trust me, you’ll be surprised!

If there are some blog posts similar to your idea, then you are on the right track, otherwise that’s not a good idea to draft into actual content.

If there are some results means your idea has some potential.

Which brings us to the next point…

Google trends

Google trends helps you find out if the search trend for a particular keyword or topic is rising or falling.

You can use it to find out if the popularity of your idea has been increasing or decreasing.

Google trends

The best part about this tool is that you can either set it to search for a particular country or the whole world depending on your idea.

If you notice an uptrend or steady trend in the searches, then it means that it is a good idea to pursue.

Buzzsumo is one of my favorite tools for content research ever.

What it does is to help you find out which type of content or which blog posts are getting the most shares and links.

And then, you could simply create similar or even better kind of content.

All you need to do is type the keyword/topic or a blog post link and it’ll show the results.

How awesome is that huh?

Here’s a tip to make the best use of this tool: After checking for the Google results, check the top 3-5 posts by typing the links in Buzzumo one by one and check their social shares and links.

This will help you figure out which type of content you need to create that will get more shares as well as rank higher in search engines.

For example, if the post on the 2nd rank is getting more shares than the post on the 1st rank, then you need to create content similar to the 2nd rank post.

Final Words

Doing proper research before creating content is one of the key ingredients to blogging success.

You can’t afford to write blog posts that no one wants to read or share.
