Are you done with setting up your blog and planning to launch it?
I know the excitement and nervousness that you must be feeling. You must be wondering if:
- “Is anyone gonna read my blog?”
- “Did I do everything right?”
- “Is my blog going to be successful?”
But don’t worry! I’m here to help you with everything you need to do before launching your blog.
Starting a blog is really easy but growing it to make it successful enough to earn a decent amount of income is hard.
Especially when you’re a beginner. You have no idea what you’re doing wrong which can affect your blog’s growth and success.
In this post, I’m going to share 19 things that you need to check before launching your blog (There’s also a free “Blog Launch” Checklist for you!).
Choosing the right Niche
Before anything else, you need to check whether you chose the right blogging niche or not.
Because if you went with a wrong niche, there are chances that no one’s gonna read your blog and you’re not going to make any money from it.
You need to take three things into considering while choosing the right niche for your new blog:
- Demand/Interest: Is there any demand/Interest for that niche? Are people searching for topics related to that niche on search engines?
- Competition: Are there any major bloggers or influencers in the same niche? Having some competition is healthy and it validates your choice of the niche.
- Profitability: Are there any products related to that niche that you can promote on your blog? This is the most crucial step if you’re planning to monetize your blog with affiliate links.
Making sure that you chose the right niche at the start can save you a lot of hassle after launching your blog.
Selecting the right host
What if one of your blog posts goes viral and you receive a massive spike in your traffic which crashes your website?
Yeah, that’s gonna suck!
That’s why it’s important that you choose the right hosting provider from the start.
Siteground is one of the most popular hosts among bloggers because of it’s excellent features and customer service. They help you with everything and not just issues related to hosting.
All of my websites (including this one!) are hosted with Siteground.
Installing the right theme
This is one of the most crucial steps. You don’t want your blog to look ugly.
Installing a clean, mobile-friendly, and SEO-optimised theme before launching your blog is more than important.
Because after you launch your blog and start getting a significant amount of traffic, it will be a really tough job for you to change your WordPress theme.
I use Divi by Elegant themes on both of my websites and I highly recommend it. It has a visual page builder that allows you to customize every corner of your website without messing with a single line of code.
You can also check Themeforest for hundreds of awesome WordPress themes and plugins.
Fundamentals of your blog
There are a few things that make your blog stand out from the crowd. These are the fundamentals of your brand identity. These are:
Your color scheme is really important for your brand to connect with your audience emotionally.
You can use Coolors to generate a great color scheme for your blog.
You need to make sure that you choose the right fonts and your text is easily readable.
Also, be consistent with your fonts.
Categories are archives where blog posts based on the same topic are collected.
Have at least 3-4 categories based on the topics relevant to your niche.
Menus help your readers navigate through your site easily. Do not fill it with anything and everything. Keep them clean and tidy.
Your sidebar is one of the most important places on your blog for conversion. You cannot afford to mess it up.
Only place important stuff like email opt-in, recent posts, etc. on your sidebar.
A website footer is another important place that is often neglected by many bloggers. You don’t wanna be one of them.
Make sure that you design it for better conversion and don’t forget to match it with your brand identity.
These are some of the basic but often neglected things that you need to check before launching your blog.
Before launching your blog, you need to make sure that your blog is ready for your readers to navigate through your blog easily and make a great first impression.
For this, you need to create the most important pages on your website which are absolutely necessary.
These are as follows:
- Contact Page
- About page
Other important pages are the legal pages of your website which are discussed below…
The Legal side of blogging
You must be wondering “what the heck is the legal side of blogging?”, right?
Well, I hate to tell you this but there are certain laws and regulations that you need to follow as well.
Not only does it protect your blog legally but it also increases the credibility of your website and builds trust among your readers.
Making sure that you have all the legal pages on your website also helps you partner with third-party services like ad networks and affiliate programs smoothly.
The most important legal pages that you need to have on your blog are:
- Disclosure statement
- Terms & conditions
How can you draft these legal pages for your blog?
You have two options – hire an attorney (expensive way!) or grab legal page templates from a trusted lawyer and draft them yourselves in just a few minutes (cheap & convenient way!).
I went with the second choice. obviously!
Before launching your blog, you wanna make sure that it is completely safe, secure and attack-proof. You don’t wanna put your blog at risk that you worked too hard to create.
There are certain plugins that help you secure your WordPress blog and boost its performance.
These plugins are:
- Antispam Bee – Protects your blog from spam comments.
- Cookie notice by dFactory – Notifies your readers that your blog collects cookies (required by the law!).
- Easy table of contents – Adds a user-friendly table of contents to your posts and pages.
- Sassy social share – Adds social media sharing plugins to your posts and pages.
- UpdraftPlus – The best plugin to create backups of your website.
- W3 Total Cache – improves the SEO and user experience of your site by increasing website performance and reducing load times.
- Wordfence security – The best security and firewall plugin.
- WP-Optimize – an all-in-one plugin that cleans your database, compresses your images and caches your site.
- Yoast SEO – The best SEO plugin you need to optimize your blog posts for search engines.
- Shortpixel – The best and most recommended plugin to compress your images and boost your site speed.
Quick note: Do not install too many plugins as it may slow your site down.
Email Opt-in forms
Getting consistent traffic is great but what’s better is returning visitors and building a user-base for your blog.
That’s why you need to focus on building your email list even before launching your blog.
Those email subscribers are going to be your regular visitors and potential customers.
For email marketing, I use and recommend Convertkit. It’s one of the most popular email marketing tools among bloggers.
Social media accounts
Before launching your blog, you need to secure your social media handles on all of the platforms (if not, then at least most of them!).
Then start building your following on 2 platforms and try to master them.
This will also serve as an audience for your newly launched blog.
Pinterest is a must! It brings a major chunk of traffic for most of the bloggers.
If you wanna learn how to master Pinterest, then I highly recommend Marina’s “Pinterest from P to T” course.
Setting up Analytics
Make sure that you set up Google Analytics and Google search console before launching your blog.
This will ensure that you keep track of your visitors and the most popular blog posts.
Analyzing what’s working and what’s not working is one of the most important aspects of successful blogging.
Pre-launch blog posts
How many blog posts are you planning to launch your blog with?
It doesn’t really matter. you just have to create long-form quality content and be consistent with it.
I launched my blog with only 1 blog post!
Make sure that you have at least 6 months of content ideas ready for your blog.
This is the most crucial phase for blog growth and you surely don’t wanna run out of content ideas just in the beginning.
How often are you planning to post content on your blog and social media?
You have to be consistent with your content and be present. No one really likes to read a dead blog or follow an inactive social media account.
Before launching your blog, you need to come up with a promotion strategy.
Successful blogging is 30% content and 70% promotion.
Which social media platforms are you planning to target? What is going to be your search engine optimization strategy?
