Who doesn’t like free stuff, right?

An opt-in freebie or a lead magnet is something that you provide to your audience for free in exchange for their email address.

But just because it’s free doesn’t mean it is supposed to be useless. You need to provide value through your freebie. You need to make it so good, that your audience won’t even think twice before subscribing to your email list.

Providing value, and that too for free is the key to growing your email list.

An opt-in freebie can be anything from an eBook, report, checklist, workbook… anything that can prove useful to your readers.

Then you simply use an email marketing tool to create an opt-in form and deliver your freebie automatically to your subscribers.

In this tutorial, I’m going to show you how to send an opt-in freebie to your new email list subscribers using ConvertKit.

Let’s get started…

Getting Started with ConvertKit

The very first thing you need to do is sign-up for ConvertKit (if you haven’t already).

ConvertKit is one of the most popular & highly recommended email marketing tools among bloggers and content creators.

Creating forms, sequences, and automations is so much fun in ConvertKit. Basically, ConvertKit makes email marketing easy for bloggers & content creators.

Plus, if you sign up through my link, you get a 30-day trial instead of a regular 14. The normal free trial is for 14 days, so if you want extra 14 days, make sure to sign-up from below.

Once you reach their platform, you’ll be asked whether you’re just starting with email or moving from another tool. Follow the quick easy steps and sign-up using your domain email & the password you want to choose.

After successfully signing up, we’re ready to create your opt-in form and send your freebie…

How to send an opt-in freebie through a sign-up form

There are two ways to send an opt-in freebie to your subscribers – through a sign-up form and through a landing page.

First, we’re going to see how to send an opt-in freebie or content upgrade through a sign-up form.

Step 1 – Click on “Landing pages & Forms” in the top menu and click on “Create new”.

Then choose the “Form” option.

Step 2 – Choose the type of form you want to create. Inline, if you want to embed the form in your blog posts, sidebar, etc. Modal, if you wanna create a pop-up form.

It’s completely upto you which type of form you want to choose. For this tutorial, we’re going with the “inline” form.

Step 3 – Choose the form template. I prefer to use the “Pine” template, but it’s completely upto you!

Step 4 – Then you’ll be taken to the form editing interface. You can easily edit any text by clicking on the text itself. You can also add the image of the freebie that you’re offering.

Customizing the form is quite easy in ConvertKit and all of the styling options are available in the magic wand or “Styles” section.

You can also hide “Powered by ConvertKit” by simply clicking on it and turning off the option.

Convertkit edit form

You can edit the form and make it look however you want. We’re going to skip that part and move to the actual part.

Step 5 – Go the Message section and make sure that the “incentive email” option is selected and the “auto confirm” option is off. What this incentive email does is that when someone opts into the opt-in form, ConvertKit will send them an incentive email after they’ve entered their information.

The incentive email is also how you will get the double opt-in from your new subscribers, meaning they will have to click the button in the email in order to confirm their subscription.

If you’re not familiar with the double opt-in, you can check out this ConvertKit article,

So that option has gotta be checked, and the incentive email is how we’re delivering this freebie.

You can then add your opt-in freebie or lead magnet into the incentive email:

  • Click URL if your freebie can be accessed with a link (i.e. a webinar or live training, a resource library on your website, video training, Google Drive links, etc.)
  • Click Download if you need to upload your freebie (i.e. a PDF or ZIP file)

Step 6 – Now, click on the “edit email contents” button to edit your incentive email. The bottom box will pop-up on your screen that will help you edit the email that will be sent to your new email list subscribers when they sign up.

Edit the subject line, email text, and button to make it relevant to your opt-in freebie. Turn the button text into something like “Download your freebie” or “Download XYZ” instead of “Confirm your subscription”.

Edit incentive email contents

Once you save your incentive email and then save the form, all that’s left is embedding the form into your blog.

Step 7 -Once you’ve saved the form, click on the “Embed” option and copy either the JavaScript or the HTML code. Both will work just fine.

I prefer the JavaScript code because you don’t have to make changes into the code every time you change something in the form. HTML doesn’t allow that.

Now, go to your WordPress editor and add a “custom HTML” block.

Paste the copied JavaScript/HTML code into the block and click on “Preview” to see how the form looks in your blog post.

You can also add the form to your sidebar by adding a HTML widget and pasting the same code.

And boom! That is how you send an opt-in freebie to your new email list subscribers using a sign-up form.

How to send an opt-in freebie through a landing page

The process for sending an opt-in freebie through a landing page is exactly the same with some minor changes. Let me show you quickly how…

Step 1 – Go to your Convertkit dashboard > Forms & landing pages > Add new > landing page and select any landing page template of your choice.

Step 2Edit your landing page design & text.

Step 3Edit your incentive email just like we did above and save your landing page.

Step 4 – Now, you don’t have to embed the landing page on your website since it is a page hosted on ConvertKit itself. All you need to do is click on “share” in the top menu and copy the link and share it with your audience.

And there you go! That’s how how you send an opt-in freebie to your new email list subscribers using ConvertKit.
